Mark Clairmont, Publisher at Muskoka Today decided that it was time to get with the times and convert his popular newspaper in the Muskoka Area from print to completely online. Their needs were pretty specific. They needed to be able to manage the content themselves, Must be able to supply the content in multiple language formats, sell advertising online and ensure that search engine optimization was such that they could dominate the local news game in the search engines. Also they were cancelling their print format immediately and the need to get this up and online as soon as possible was paramount.
Muskoka Graphics decided to do a heavily modified WordPress CMS type website. Created and installed a newspaper style theme for it. A banner advertising module was created to allow banners to have a run date and automatically remove the advertising when the contract had run out, as well a module to prune the database to remove articles 6 months and older to keep things fresh and clean on the server. A module to take payments online for advertising was installed as well. After a month of trial and tweaking, www.muskokatodaily.com was launched. Currently this website enjoys over 6,000 visits and 15,000 page views per month right after launch. 37% of all visits are new visitors to the site so it will grow immensely and quickly! No pay per click campaign was used just good old fashioned proper Search Engine Optimization thanks to the ease of WordPress. The cost to build this site was roughly the cost of one months printing (2 issues) One heck of a savings for their company.
